Circle Blog #1

When I first arrived at Penn State I was definitely a "newbie." I only had one friend from my hometown coming to PSU with me, much like how Mae only had one friend (Annie) when she first got the job at The Circle. I can relate to Mae because she enters a big, powerful, and intimidating atmosphere at the Circle which makes her nervous. This is similar to when I first came to Penn State. I was excited for my future but also nervous. The main source for my nerve derived from the fact Penn State is a prestigious institution that has high expectations of its students right when they step foot on campus both in and out of class. I was not sure if I could live up to these expectations or if I would fit in. Like me, Mae was worried she would not be successful at her new job or be able to live up the expectations of her new co-workers and company. However, unlike Mae I have much more independence because my every move is not being watched. If it were like that for me I feel it would make the transition at Penn State a lot harder and make me a lot more nervous.

In The Circle social media and technology are very influential aspects of life, as well the idea that innovation is a very important instigator in advancing society. In our present day social media and technology are taking over peoples lives. There are a great deal of social media websites that have a wide range of users from 5 year old children in New York to elderly people in China. Many people, including myself, spend hours of their time: tweeting, updating their FaceBook status, texting, Snap Chatting, or  using any of the other copious amounts of social media websites and apps. In The Circle they force the workers who work at The Circle to use social media and even promote it by having a ranking system for those who post more. Onto the idea of innovation and technology. In society today, huge amounts of money and resources are allocated to trying to improve technology to make the world a better place. However none of this would be possible without the innovation of the people trying to improve technology. Although Penn State does not have the money or resources as a national government it has just as much innovation within its student body. The leaders of the school and alumni catalyze this innovation by giving us the best facilities for students to further their education and perform research. All the improvements made around campus better life and create even more opportunities. The idea of advancing society and bettering life is also prominent in The Circle because innovation is the main purpose of the company.  I remember one of the Deans who spoke at Freshman Convocation emphasizing innovation. It is evident innovation is a important idea in both life at Penn State and in The Circle.

The past two weeks I've been bombarded by homework, reading assignments, essays, and the need to sleep. Like every college student, college work is controlling my life and taking me away from other important things such as my family. Similar to Mae's new job, college has separated me from my family. I still talk to them every day, but it is not the same as seeing them everyday. Also they are not as involved in my life like they were before becoming a Penn Stater. However, unlike Mae I still give attention to my family and am not completely isolated from them in my new life. When Mae's dad gets sick, instead of going to help her father and family, she ignores them completely. Mae becomes obsessed with her job and social media; focusing all her attention on her new life. Mae breaking away from her family illustrates the importance of social media in The Circle, and the difference in moral value in our society and society in the book.

What to do or What Not to do

I have to say, when Professor Kramer first told our class that we would be blogging weekly for the whole semester, I was not too thrilled. As if it weren't already enough, she broke the news that we were not going to just be writing one, but TWO  blogs. I felt like I was getting kicked when I was already on the ground.  My whole life I always gave blogging a negative connotation, thinking blogs were just over exaggerated opinions on pointless topics like the new drama with the Kardashians.  However, as I browsed the internet examining and reading other blogs to use as samples for mine; my feelings about blogging quickly changed. I came to realize that there was a blog for almost any topic, and that some of them were actually very well written and interesting to read! Now eager to start writing a blog of my very own I began brainstorming topics that I was passionate enough to write about for a whole semester. After mentally going back and forth for a few days I finally came to a conclusion: sports or food.

Sports Title TBD: My whole life I have been an avid sports fan. Wether it be football, basketball, hockey, boxing, soccer,  or etc I love it all.  My favorite part about sports is that anything can happen at given moment; on or off the field.  My deep passion for sports mixed with the endless topics to discuss about in the sports world makes it the perfect blogging topic for me. Although I would love to talk about every sport in my blog, I plan on writing about 3 sports: Football, Baseball, and Hockey (mainly Later in the semester). I will not just be re-capping or stating stats from the game the night before, that would bore the reader to death. Instead my blog will include sports analysis,  information and my opinions on controversies in professional and collegian sports,  and breaking news in the sports world (trades, suspensions, injuries) and the impact that it will have on those teams involved. From Colin Kaepernick protesting the national Anthem to Teddy Bridgewater suffering a tragic knee injury that devastated so many Vikings fans nationwide, it will all be discussed in my blog.

Cooking Title TBD: Besides my family, food is the most important thing in the world to me. Not just because it keeps me alive, but the powers food possesses. I am not talking about super powers, although it would be pretty cool if a hamburger could fly around the room before being eaten. Instead, by "powers" I mean how food can bring cultures and people together. How one delicious bite can take you from sadness to happiness. How you can find your soulmate in the line at a coffee shop. Food is viewed as such a simple and minuscule item, but in reality symbolizes so much more. Enough about how great I think food is, its time for some substance. Because Food Channel won't give me my own show yet I do not have the luxury of traveling from country to country tasting the different flavors of the world. Therefore,  my options for this blog will be limited. However I believe State College will provide me with enough "flavor" to write about for the semester. For this blog I plan on reviewing different well known restaurants around State College, as well as a couple restaurants from my home town (Washington D.C.) while on academic breaks. I will include everything from service, waiting periods, taste of food, atmosphere; the whole 9 yards really. Additionally I will compare and contrast the restaurants I visit for the readers of my blog to use as advice when making decisions on where to eat around town. What I think could be really fun about this blog is that my peers could participate in the blog by recommending restaurants for me to eat at, or even join me for a meal ( (You can also join Professor Kramer, foods on me ;) ).
